LAS CRUCES, NM – As the 2024 election season continues, and with the nation facing a continued shortage of election officials, the Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office is recognizing Help America Vote Day on August 1st, 2024. Help America Vote Day aims to address the nationwide shortage of election officials, inspire greater civic engagement and volunteerism, and help ensure safe, secure, accessible, and transparent elections in Doña Ana County. This is also an opportunity to share election and voting information from trusted sources like the Doña Ana County Clerk’s Office.
“Election officials are an integral part of the election process. A significant way Americans can serve their community and nation is by becoming an election official” said County Clerk, Dr. Amanda López Askin. “We are excited to recognize Help America Vote Day. Also, to help kick-off the general election by bringing awareness to our efforts of recruiting election officials and ensure that all voters in Doña Ana County can cast their ballot this upcoming election.” added López Askin.
Election officials are responsible for setting up and preparing the polling location, welcoming voters, verifying voter registrations, and issuing ballots. Election officials also help ensure voters understand the voting process by demonstrating how to use voting equipment and explaining voting procedures. Election staff and election officials are overseen by local election authorities, which also provide training in advance of Election Day. An aging population of election officials and concerns around health and safety have resulted in recurring shortages of election officials nationwide. There are millions of Americans, including many voters with disabilities, who intend to cast a ballot during early voting or on Election Day. Having an adequate number of election officials to staff polling places on and before Election Day will ensure voters receive the assistance they need at the polls, reduce the potential for long lines or congestion and help provide a positive and smooth voting experience for all voters.
