Three areas with more than 300 acres successfully treated
RUIDOSO, New Mexico, September 19, 2023 – Crews from the Smokey Bear Ranger District successfully completed two prescribed burns on the Lincoln National Forest, as part of the long-term management plan for overall forest health and large-scale wildfire mitigation.
The prescribed burns took place near Jack’s Peak, Brazel, and at the Smokey Bear Administration site.
“Prescribed burns are vital for our forest management plan, and helping improve the overall health of the forest,” said Sean Donaldson, fuels specialist for the Smokey Bear Ranger District. “These two projects are great examples of how beneficial this work is for the forest, and how we can use this process to help reduce fuel buildup.”
The burns took place in both rural and urban interface. In total, 362 acres were treated. The burn areas will continue to be monitored for any hotspots, as well as continued analysis of regrowth and long-term benefits in the area.
Careful planning and research goes into the development of a prescribed burn project, with specialists analyzing the area, weather patterns, and moisture levels before and during the execution of the prescribed burn.
Smokey Bear Ranger District will continue work in the Grindstone area, as tentative burns are being scheduled throughout this week. Weather and other contending factors can result in a cancellation.
