LAS CRUCES, NM – Former President Jimmy Carter’s impact on election integrity and voting rights continues to resonate both within the United States and around the globe. Carter’s efforts, during and after his presidency, have helped shape policies and practices that promote democracy and transparency.
As President (1977–1981):
President Carter recognized the urgent need to address low voter turnout in the U.S. by proposing comprehensive electoral reforms. His initiatives sought to simplify voter registration and make elections more accessible to all Americans. While these proposals faced resistance and were ultimately unsuccessful, they underscored his commitment to strengthening democracy. Carter’s civil rights advocacy, which included appointing minorities and women to key positions, further advanced the cause of political inclusivity.
Post-Presidency Contributions:
Carter’s work expanded globally with the founding of the Carter Center in 1982. Over the years, the Carter Center has monitored over 125 elections in emerging democracies, ensuring fairness and transparency. In recent years, the Carter Center has turned its focus inward, monitoring elections in the United States to bolster trust in the electoral process amid increasing political polarization.
Carter’s advocacy for voting rights has been steadfast, emphasizing the importance of fair and transparent elections as the cornerstone of democratic governance. His dedication to election integrity has left a lasting legacy in promoting democratic values both in the United States and around the world.
Doña Ana County Clerk, Amanda López Askin, reflected on Carter’s enduring legacy. “Collaborating with the Carter Center on several elections has been an incredible experience. Their commitment to upholding election integrity and promoting civil rights reminds us of the critical importance of every American’s right to vote. President Carter’s work highlights how deeply intertwined voting rights and civil rights are. By ensuring fair and accessible elections, we honor the fundamental principles of equality and justice that define our democracy. His legacy inspires us to protect these rights for future generations.”
