LAS CRUCES, NM – Abel Covarrubias, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Aprendamos Family of Services, has been named Chair of the Boys & Girls Club of Las Cruces “Building Great Futures” Capital Campaign Committee.
As chair of the committee, Covarrubias will be instrumental in creating and executing a plan to raise the $8 to $10 million needed to renovate and expand the former Video 4 building located at 1005 El Paseo Rd. The new 30,000-square-foot facility will allow the Boys & Girls Club of Las Cruces to triple the amount of youth served daily and is part of a city-wide initiative to revitalize the El Paseo corridor.
After establishing Aprendamos Early Intervention in 2006, Covarrubias created five additional programs to provide a continuum of services for children and families including Esperanza Children’s Therapy Clinic, Mariposa Autism Service Center, Alegria Family Counseling, Cariño Home Visiting Program, and the Conscious Fathering Program of Southern New Mexico.
As a first-generation Mexican American and native of New Mexico, Covarrubias’ journey began in the farming community of Arrey, NM. He attended New Mexico State University and received a Master of Arts Degree in Special Education/Communication Disorders. He is a Co-Founder of Hearts for Autism and serves on various boards including Las Cruces Catholic Schools, NMSU College of Health, Education and Social Transformation Transition Advisory Committee, Southern New Mexico Catholic Education Foundation, NMSU Foundation, and ZERO TO THREE, a national board based in Washington, DC.
“Although I did not become a farmer like others in my family, I wholeheartedly believe in planting seeds to support future generations and giving back to our community,” said Covarrubias. “I am beyond honored to lead the charge to help bring the dream of a new Boys & Girls Club facility to life for the youth of Las Cruces,” he added.
Covarrubias, along with his family and shareholders of the Aprendamos Family of Services organization, have committed to a lead gift of $100,000 in support of the Club’s capital campaign. Their gift will help create a zen space for youth who need time to decompress after their day at school and also support the building of the facility’s entry lobby.
“Abel is a thoughtful, impactful leader in our community, and our board and team could not be more grateful to have him as chair of our capital campaign committee,” said Ashley Echavarria, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Las Cruces. “His generosity inspires us daily and we appreciate his leadership and guidance as we begin this journey to build a space our community’s kids and teens deserve.”
