Picacho Avenue has reopened for traffic after bomb squad personnel determined that a suspicious package near the Adult Probation and Parole Office was an empty box.
About 8:40 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, Las Cruces police were dispatched to APO after someone spotted an item that was described as suspicious. Out of an abundance of caution, police temporarily closed a portion of west Picacho Avenue while investigators from the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives studied the package. About 11:40 a.m., investigators determined the package was an empty box and posed no harm to the community. Picacho Avenue, between 17th Street and Motel Boulevard, has since reopened to traffic.
