El Paso Teachers Union Official Comments On Attorney General School Decision Making

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s statement about school decision making is causing a ruckus in El Paso. Yesterday, Michael Reese, vice president of the El Paso American Federation of Teachers group said Paxton’s statement that unelected health officials don’t have the authority to keep schools closed is true but divisive. Reese says decision making regarding whether to have in class instruction has always belonged to the school districts’ leadership. He says districts are in consultation with health officials during the COVID-19 emergency but all final decisions are made by the districts making Paxton’s quip unnecessary and divisive.
